Fiction Friday with The Teaching Thief!

I am linking up with Amanda over at The Teaching Thief to share one of my favorite fiction books to read with my kids.

This year, I was introduced to Roland Smith. He is an incredible author. His library of books ranges from picture books to chapter books. Since I teach science, I was very excited to hear about his Storm Runners series. My students and I were on the edge of our seats as we read each book. Often times we would be reading and realize that one minute separated us from the afternoon dismissal bell. Then I would have to FREAK OUT and make sure all my kids got to their bus. Despite my end of the day panic, I wouldn't trade those little moments.

I plan on kicking off the year with Smith's story, "Storm Runners" to excite my kids about science, reading, and to hook those boys!

Link up with Amanda and share your favorite fiction picks with the boggy world!

  1. I have seen this book in my Scholastic book order and it looked AWESOME! I'm so glad to have a recommendation now. I hesitated ordering because I thought it would be too high for most of my 4th graders like most of his other books. He is such an awesome writer for 5th and up. (Have you read Sasquatch? Good!) Anyway, what do you think? Something for a 4th grade classroom? Read aloud only? Or should I just download on my Kindle and enjoy it on my own. Thanks for linking up!! I'm so excited that more people are sharing their books suggestions and ideas!

    1. I think it would be great for your 4th graders. It's a lower level book than Sasquatch and Jaguar (two excellent picks!) It was definitely an awesome read aloud. Plus, it got my students HOOKED on Roland Smith. They loved him and when we completed and author study, I couldn't peel the books away from them!

  2. I haven't read this one, but years ago, the 5th graders were part of the Jason project and we read Jaguar by Roland Smith. LOVED IT! I will make sure to add this one to my TBR list! (Which, BTW, is longer than my life already - but I can't resist adding to it!) Thanks for the recommendation.

    1. My kids LOVED Jaguar too. We completed a lit study on Jaguar after MAP testing this year. My kids were captivated by the story. I plan on starting the year off with a lit study of some kind to get them hooked again!

    1. YES! The whole book talks in depth about different weather patterns and hurricanes. Since we live in the midwest, it was great for my students to talk about different storms other than tornadoes and thunderstorms.
